About the Tile Society
Gather | Learn | Play
The Tile Society is a mahjong studio in Wyckoff, NJ offering beginner and intermediate lessons, competitive leagues, and curated social events throughout Bergen County.
Designed for connection, curiosity, and learning. More than a place to play, it’s a thoughtfully curated space where people gather to engage their minds, build community, and enjoy the ritual of Mahjong in a welcoming, judgment-free environment.
Founded on the belief that Mahjong is both a game and a practice, The Tile Society offers structured instruction, guided play, private lessons, and social sessions for players at every stage—from beginners learning the tiles to seasoned players looking to refine their strategy. We approach Mahjong as a “CrossFit for the brain”: stimulating, social, and deeply rewarding.
Our atmosphere is warm, inclusive, and intentionally calm. We value good manners, mutual respect, and a shared love of the game. Whether you come alone or with friends, you’ll find yourself part of a community that values focus, laughter, and meaningful connection—without pressure or pretense.
At its core, The Tile Society is about gathering with purpose: learning something new, staying mentally sharp, and creating space in your life for play, presence, and people.
Erika Palmer
Founder
Erika Palmer is the founder of Gather Create Nourish, a wellness-rooted community centered on connection and care, and the creator of The Tile Society, its Mahjong collective. Erika’s Mahjong journey began in 2018 when her mother, Wendy Statuto—who was introduced to Mahjong in the 70s—taught her the game. What started as a way to gather with friends quickly became something deeper: a beautiful blend of strategy, ritual, and joy that brings women together across generations.
A lifelong community builder and wellness entrepreneur, Erika turned her love of Mahjong into beginner workshops and gatherings that offer a warm, modern entry point to the game. Drawing on her background in wellness, education, and hospitality, she brings a calm, welcoming energy to the table. She’s especially proud to be building The Tile Society — creating something collaborative, multigenerational, and deeply meaningful.
Mahjong matters deeply to Erika because learning the game is only the beginning—belonging is what comes next. Having moved across the country three times, she understands how vulnerable it can feel to start over and find your people. Her vision is simple: Mahjong should be open, inclusive, and expansive—so that anyone who wants to learn, play, and grow can always find a seat at the table.
